Apologists: Ravi Zacharias
This week we lost our brother Ravi, one of the most formidable Christian intellectuals of the 21st century and a giant. He was classmates with the formidable William Lane Craig, student under the Titan Norman Geisler (who passed away just the year before) and rose to form and become head of RZIM (Ravi Zacharias International Ministries)
Ravi has been very influential on my own Christian walk. I remember being invited by my Pastor Pete Matthew to a RZIM event in London UK at All Souls Church (I’d been a Christian for a few months I think) Still working out the inner weavings of Christian theology really when the Wisdom of John Lennox opened the Apologetics Pandora’s box. John introduced me to RZIM’s wider speakers from Amy Orr Ewing to Nabeel Qureshi, Michael Ramsden etc. But I’d be crazy to not eventually listen to a talk by the head of the ministry, Ravi himself.
Talks and interviews
Ravi is one of the only Christians to ever preach in the Mormon Tabernacle. I think the other was D.L. Moody or John Wesley? (Feelfree to fact check me!).
Presented brilliant lectures on how Christians should be prepared to do apologetics today.
Gave lectures to huge audiences
He gave academic lectures at places like Princeton as to why he is not an atheist.
This is one of his earliest addresses we can find on the web!
God and suffering.
He’s done multiple Q&A’s sometimes with well known evangelists from all sorts of denominations.
Being Indian he engaged with the contrast between Christianity and other religions as well as the secular culture of the day.
Many in the Christian community know that Nabeel was the protégé of Ravi and the two of them were a force to be reckoned with as we see in this lecture.
It was sad to hear a few years ago Nabeel died at 34 years old in which Ravi spoke at length at a funeral service. It was a moving, tearful talk.
Lectures at the Veritas Forum
He’s delivered some highly stimulating lectures at the Veritas forum
Many interviews, including many on prestigious non-Christian shows
Ravi has a unique way of handling Q&A, very much a narrative/story man, not just black and white answers. He is a man of context and the wisdom of context is so important.
These two are famous classics of his.
With inspiring stories and thought-provoking questions, Ravi Zacharias traces the multiple threads of our lives, describing how the unseen hand of God guides our joys, our tragedies, and our daily humdrum experiences to weave a pattern of divine providence and meaning.
In a world with so many religions – why Jesus? You are living in a time when you can believe anything, as long as you do not claim it to be true. In the name of “tolerance,” postmodern culture embraces everything from Eastern mysticism to New Age spirituality. But as Ravi Zacharias points out, such unquestioning acceptance of all things spiritual is absurd. All religions, plainly and simply, cannot be true.
Jesus Among Other Gods is a brilliant defense of the uniqueness of the Christian message. In addition to giving you the benefit of an impressive breadth of reading and study, Ravi Zacharias shares his personal journey from despair and meaninglessness to his discovery that Jesus is who He said He is.
The rise of these secular gods presents the most serious challenge to the absolute claims of Christ since the founding of Christianity itself. The Christian worldview has not only been devalued and dismissed by modern culture, but its believers are openly ridiculed as irrelevant. In Jesus Among Secular Gods, Ravi Zacharias and Vince Vitale challenge the popular “isms” of the day, skillfully pointing out the fallacies in their claims and presenting compelling evidence for revealed absolute truth as found in Jesus. This book is fresh, insightful, and important, and faces head on today’s most urgent challenges to Christian faith. It will help seekers to explore the claims of Christ and will provide Christians with the knowledge to articulate why they believe that Jesus stands tall above all other gods.
Why would a loving and powerful God allow so much pain and suffering? In Why Suffering? Ravi Zacharias and Vince Vitale carefully walk you through a variety of responses that considered together provide a clear, comprehensive, and convincing answer. Here is a book written with great respect for the complexity of the issue, recognizing that some who read it will be in the trenches of deep suffering themselves and others questioning the very existence of a loving God. Why Suffering? provides an answer to the problem of pain and suffering with emotional sensitivity and intellectual integrity.
In Seeing Jesus from the East, Ravi Zacharias and Abdu Murray show us why a broader view of Jesus is needed – one that recognizes the uniquely Eastern ways of thinking and communicating found in the pages of the Bible. Zacharias and Murray capture a revitalized gospel message, presenting it through this Eastern lens and revealing its power afresh to Western hearts and minds.
